The Sunday Review

Is it okay to stand and watch a referee all afternoon? I don't think so. The Referee (I can't be bothered to name him as I'll not give him the satisfaction) decided after an alright first half to go ballastic in the second. On several occasions the referee angered the visiting supporters with some bemusing decisions. Some much was the Ref's influence towards the home side that Roy McFarland and Martin Allen decided to have a verbal joust with each other and had to be seperated by the Fourth Offical.

It was a smashing day in the capital, you're esteemed editor and a couple of collegues decided to visit by train and the 8.30 to St Pancras was the order. Got into London for around 10.45 and headed to Piccadilly Circus for a jar or two. Now we set off to get to Brentford's Griffin Park ground around 2.00pm and we still managed to miss the kick off. As soon as we got in I saw the Chief on his own upfront with Debolla playing wide and I was a little annoyed as pre-match talk had been that the Blues would play with three attacking. Jamie McMaster had been sidelined with Flu and Mark Hudson had not recovered from the calf injury sustained last week. A first League start for Carlos Logan and Adam Smith made the bench.

Mark Debolla looked dangerous with a chance after being put through by Gareth Davies, but then GOAL DEBOLLA!, a lovely through ball from Carlos Logan set the Londoner free and he slotted it past Stuart Nelson in the Bees goal. After that the Brentford gained the possesion and took the match to us. It was hard to see them not scoring but the longer the game went on we felt that three points were for the taking.
Into the second half and the Spireites replaced Debolla and Logan with N'Toya and Smith and as soon as this had happened The Chief scored from a lovely cross from Mark Allott.
Quickly Brentford pulled a goal back through ex-Derby striker Dion Burton and now the pressure was back on, ten minuted later a deflected shot from Jay Tabb squared the game. The spireites still felt though that we could hang on for a point now as this was what we deserved having to play a tough Brentford side and the Referee.

Overall I felt that a point apiece was fair, Brentford had far more tricks up their sleeves for us, however our defence was superb, although we conceded two goals because of them it could have been a lot more. When the Chief scored I looked at my mate and he started doing cigar impressions as if we could now defend until full time, that lasted no more than two minutes. I was pleased that we contributed to a good game, we have 51 points now and one more and we have bettered last season so things are on the up with the azzurri and I look forward to the remainder of the season. One last thing three players shone for me yesterday. Gareth Davies, Mark Debolla and Ian Evatt.
Had bust up with Brentford manager Martin Allen
