The London-born defender, who has won three caps for Jamaica, said: "Although I had some options, I am delighted to be joining Chesterfield.
"I am really looking forward to kicking off the season at what is a fabulous new stadium."
Dundee were among several SPL clubs believed to be interested in signing Ford, who will officially join the League Two club on 1 July.
